Working Group Objectives (Spring 2010)

Education Committee

 

  • The Education Committee Working Group will organize three events: 

 

  • A Survivor's Story: Testimony of the Earthquake:  a forum that will include the Reverend Armstrong (Pastor Shiloh Baptist Church and former TCNJ Trustee) and colleagues who were in Haiti when the earthquake struck the country.  Date TBD.

 

  • Tent City: a program that will allow visitors Brower with an opportunity to see and learn more about the living conditions in Haiti--as well as a chance to learn more about the country's history and make a donation via its "dollar stackers" project with HSA.  Week of March 29th.

 

  • Road to Fondwa: a short documentary that tells the powerful story of a rural Haitian community poised to change the future of the country; followed by a Q & A session.  This discussion will be led by four scholars from TCNJ (Robert McGreevy, Maggie Benoit, and Winifred Brown-Claude) and Temple University.  April 6th. Roscoe West 201 (Old Library). 7 to 9 pm.

Service Learning Trips

 

  • Higher Education Activity Report: a memo that will capture what other colleges and universities are doing--or are planning to do--with respect to traveling to Haiti and participating in service projects or study abroad experiences.

 

  • Opportunities Report: a memo that lists international service organizations that are currently recruiting individuals to help with the Haitian relief efforts.

 

  • Study Abroad Project: to meet with TCNJ's Study Abroad office and, if possible, work to develop a summer or winter break Study Abroad experience with a strong community engaged learning component.

 

  • Bonner & EWB Memo: to organize a meeting with Bonner Center staff and TCNJ's chapter of Engineers without Borders to explore the interest and potential for a Haitian relief project, utilizing existing grant resources, if possible.

Fundraising

 

  • To provide a recommendation to the campus community regarding reputable charitable organizations

 

  • To develop and guide an electronic pledge campaign to generate support for relief efforts and capture the amount of resources provided by the campus community

 

  • To establish lines of communication with Student Affairs and student organizations with respect to needs (e.g. cash v clothing) of the Haitian community

 

  • To gather information regarding all fundraising efforts (including student organizations) and provide reports to the administration and campus community

Communication/Outreach

 

  • Ensure that The College of New Jersey community, as well as those outside of TCNJ, are kept aware of opportunities for fundraising, support, and education regarding the recent earthquake in Haiti. This will include timely updates to the TCNJ Here for Haiti wiki page and efforts to keep the community familiar with and aware of the wiki page as our official source for information. 

 

  • Foster a relationship between The College of New Jersey and the greater community (including Ewing Township, Mercer County, and beyond) specific to causes/initiatives related to the Haitian Earthquake, so that we may work collaboratively to increase the success of both TCNJ-sponsored programs and those sponsored by groups throughout the community.

  • Inform campus community of resources available to support those who have been impacted by the Haiti Earthquake.
